As we step into October, Keats’ words echo with gentle truth – this truly is a season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. In schools, it marks a moment of settling, of rhythm, and of reflection after the whirlwind of September.

The start of a new academic year is always a time of great energy and movement. September brings with it the excitement of new beginnings – new school (for us!), new pupils, new staff, new timetables, and new possibilities. It’s a month of establishing norms, setting expectations, and laying the foundations for the months ahead. And while it can feel relentless, it is also deeply rewarding.

Across our schools, we’ve seen the return of clubs, societies, and enrichment activities that bring joy and connection to our young people. From debating teams to drama rehearsals, coding clubs to choirs, not to mention all of the myriad of sports, these are the spaces where students find their passions and build friendships. The hum of purposeful activity is a sign that we are getting into flow, that beautiful state where effort meets engagement and learning becomes truly alive.

Teachers, school staff and school leaders have worked tirelessly to create environments where students feel safe, challenged, and inspired. Classrooms are now places of routine and rhythm, where learning is deepening and relationships are strengthening. The early days of uncertainty are giving way to confidence, and the seeds planted in September are beginning to grow.

October offers us a chance to pause and take stock. It’s a time to notice the progress already made, to celebrate small victories, and to recalibrate where needed. It’s also a time to reconnect with our purpose. In the busyness of school life, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture – but every lesson taught, every conversation had, every moment of care offered contributes to something far greater: the shaping of young lives.

To my fellow educators and school leaders, I offer this message: your work matters deeply. The energy you bring, the standards you set, and the compassion you show are building the future. You are not just delivering a curriculum, you are nurturing potential, fostering resilience, and inspiring hope.

So let this October be a month of quiet pride in what has already been achieved, and renewed commitment to what lies ahead. Let us continue to lead with courage, teach with passion, and serve with heart in the very best interests of all our young people.

(A special little personal note on this blog, to all those working in my own school here in Lurgan – thank you for EVERYTHING you have done to help our young people settle into their new school in St Ronan’s College, since August 2025. It is an absolute privilege to work alongside each of you. Thank you one and all.)

Well said Fiona. The craziness of September is over. The beautiful month of October is here when we should all take time to walk through Autumn leaves and remember days of childhood when we kicked the leaves in the air with friends walking home from school or just playing around. To all involved in education the months ahead are undoubtedly busy times but the groundwork is done. Remember it is October and the Halloween break is looming. To all involved St Ronan’s College the crazy move is over. Enjoy your beautiful new school.

I love this Fiona. I think I love autumn so much because I was an autumnal baby. I can’t wait to get down to see the new school.

I got bit emotional there thinking of childhood walks to school, with autumn leaves crunching under foot. Beautiful memories.

Now I need to go and find myself a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils x 🧡🍁
